Day 0 Part 1 - Who doesn’t like a bonus..?

So 5/6 of us have arrived at OKC, hopefully Roger will get here in time to join us for today for an unscheduled extra chase day as Peter nobly gave up his between tours rest day for the cause.

As usual I’m wide awake at 04:30 so start the blog ramble. About to have a leisurely breakfast ready for a 9:30 meet and a tour of the National Weather Service in Norman to our south which should be interesting. Think we’ll drive through Moore, the unluckiest tornado hotspot in the world being on the end of 3 F5/EF5 tornadoes in the last 20 years. They’ll be fretting about Monday too, more later.

The SPC has an Enhance Risk (level 4 of 6) for severe weather over a large area of the Plains today with a 10% chance of EF2 to EF5 tornadoes over Arkansas and NE Texas. We’re constrained today as we need to return to the hotel for tonight’s stay, but such is the expanse of severe weather predicted there should be plenty to play with. North west Oklahoma looks like a reasonable option.

Monday has a moderate risk (level 5/6) forecast centred on Oklahoma City bang on the historical average. I’ve never chased on a moderate risk day. There’s the possibility of devastating tornadoes, horrendous and dangerous chasing convergences or an unchasable anticlimactic mess. Exciting and daunting at the same time with risk management the order of the day.
